Apprentice Of The Year - Regional, Female And Fabulous

A Mortlake student who went on to undertake a plumbing apprenticeship with a long-standing Warrnambool business has become Victoria’s Apprentice of the Year for 2020.

Liberal Member for Western Victoria, Bev McArthur, celebrated Shona McGuigan’s success in the Victorian Parliament this week.

“Shona was the first female plumbing apprentice at Cri-Tech in Warrnambool after completing her training through South West TAFE,” Mrs McArthur said.

“Cri-Tech employs more than 30 workers and has served south-west Victoria for nearly 70 years.

“Shona has a lot to be proud of, winning the highly male dominated industry but also against the thousands of apprentices in metropolitan Melbourne and right across the state.”

Ms McGuigan’s win was presented as part of the Victorian Training Awards, this year held online due to the coronavirus restrictions.

The Apprentice of the Year Award trophy, $5000 prizemoney and the industry wide recognition is given to the apprentice who has shown ‘outstanding achievement in all aspects of the trade’.

“Shona first discovered her passion for plumbing at her school, Mortlake College, where they allow students to trial various career pathways.

“Trades men and women across Victoria play a vital role in our local communities in ensuring the safety and functionality of our homes and businesses.”

"Shona McGuigan is a shining example of our outstanding young country students who are clearly able to successfully compete against their city and regional cousins in important areas of trade training and apprenticeships", Mrs McArthur concluded.
