UK ELECTION A WIN FOR RURAL VICTORIA
Member for Western Victoria Region, Bev McArthur has welcomed the Conservative Party’s victory in the UK general election as a win for rural Victoria.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s victory will mean that Britain’s exit from the European Union will take place in 2020, opening up export opportunities for rural Victoria.
Bev McArthur said “Western Victoria is home to around 1300 dairy farms, which employ over 6800 people, who have been mostly unable to export their products into the UK.”
“The UK are the second largest importer of dairy products worldwide, but the EU has enjoyed a monopoly over its supply. Now is a chance for Western Victoria to begin selling our products to a new international market.”
“The costly and freedom-stifling EU will no longer be able to prevent Australia’s agricultural exports from reaching British consumers.”
“I urge the Federal Government to ensure that a favourable free trade agreement is established with the UK after their exit from the EU, so that our agricultural export opportunities are enhanced.”
